Important family law advocacy update

  • February 09, 2016

OBA Family Law Section Members:

Today the Ministry of the Attorney General and the Law Society of Upper Canada announced the appointment of the Honourable Justice Annemarie Bonkalo to lead a review to consider whether a broader range of legal service providers, such as paralegals, law clerks and students, should be allowed to handle certain family law matters.

Justice Bonkalo has also been asked to seek input on what types of legal services, if handled by a broader range of legal service providers, could improve the family law system and how alternative service providers could be held accountable.

As part of the review, the Ministry of the Attorney General has issued a consultation paper (see link below). Comments are due by April 30, 2016.

The Ontario Bar Association's Family Law Section will be preparing a submission that reflects the views and experiences of our members across the province. If you have comments or suggestions that you wish to contribute, please send them to advocacy@oba.org no later than March 1, 2016.

Sincerely,

Sharon Shore
Chair, OBA Family Law Section
