The Law Society of Upper Canada’s Professional Development and Competence Committee has released a final report with recommendations on the Pathways Pilot Project. Among the recommendations, the report proposes an extension of the current Pathways Pilot Project for two years – a recommendation included in the OBA’s submission to the Committee.

The OBA’s Equality Committee, working with a subcommittee and OBA Council members, recently brought forward ideas and recommendations to the OBA Board of Directors regarding diversity in leadership, focusing on inclusion and representation within the OBA. One of the recommendations was that the OBA adopt an organization-wide diversity statement affirming the OBA’s ongoing efforts to increase inclusion.

The Law Society of Upper Canada has released two key reports on topics of interest to members of the OBA.

In a National Post article, OBA President David Sterns discusses the difficulties with Ontario’s largely paper-based justice system and presses for the implementation of technology.

In accordance with the OBA By-law, all members are hereby advised that the OBA annual meeting is scheduled to take place on Friday, September 23, 2016 at 7 p.m.

The OBA welcomes the 2016-2017 Family Law Section Executive. The new executive takes over in August 15th, 2016. The Family Law executive is responsible for facilitating learning, advocacy and networking on behalf of the Family Law section.

On June 13, 2016, Premier Wynne announced significant changes to her cabinet, increasing its size from 27 to 30, moving ten ministers into new roles, and bringing in seven new members. Cabinet has four lawyers, including Yasir Naqvi as Attorney General.

On June 7, 2016 the Premier announced new “Gender Diversity Targets,” which flow from recommendations in a report commissioned by the government on Gender Diversity on Boards in Canada.

The Law Society Human Rights Award, established in 2013, recognizes outstanding contributions to the advancement of human rights and/or the promotion of the rule of law provincially, nationally or internationally. The award is granted every two years to an individual who has demonstrated devotion to the advancement of human rights and the rule of law over a long term or a single outstanding act of service.
