On June 20, OBA members attended the final Trusts and Estates Brown Bag Lunch meeting for the 2022-2023 term.
The June meeting kicked off with a lively discussion about estate planning for the family cottage. One participant shared some details of a situation with which she was dealing, and BBLers shared their experience and advice. Participants had many helpful and insightful comments, but the general consensus seemed to be that the topic of planning for the family cottage is often uniquely and particularly challenging.
Next, one BBLer sought others’ thoughts on the new option of a lawyer’s certificate of service instead of an affidavit of service. Some participants have embraced the lawyer’s certificate, while some have been hesitant to incorporate it into their practice simply because it seems “too good to be true”. None of the attendees shared any negative experiences with using the lawyer’s certificate, and the consensus seemed to be that it is actually a helpful option and not “too good to be true” after all.
