In October of this year, the estates world, and the legal world, suffered a significant loss with the passing of the Honourable Justice Glenn Hainey.
Justice Hainey was appointed as a judge of the Ontario Superior Court in 2010. Although many of us know him as the head of the Toronto Commercial List and a judge on the Toronto Estates List, earlier on in his career on the bench he presided over many criminal proceedings. This gave His Honour a broad base and range of experiences on which he drew throughout his time on the bench.
Before being appointed to the bench, Justice Hainey had a remarkable career as a lawyer. He was originally trained by Arthur Maloney, Q.C. He practiced at Smith Lyons until the firm merged with Gowling Lafleur Henderson LLP, where he was the leader of the litigation department. Justice Hainey led a number of significant commercial litigation cases throughout his career.
