Older Adults Need to Know the Rights that Protect Them
In honour of Seniors Month, the Ontario Bar Association (OBA) is offering free sessions designed to equip seniors and their families with essential information to safeguard their rights. These sessions aim to enhance understanding of the legal rights and obligations of older adults and caregivers.
Led by experienced lawyers who specialize in elder law, these discussions will address crucial topics such as legal measures to prevent financial exploitation of seniors, capacity-related issues, and the importance of powers of attorney.
The need for such education has become increasingly urgent, as scams targeting Canadian seniors have surged in recent years. The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre reported more than $9.2 million lost to emergency scams, including “grandparent scams,” in 2022 — a significant increase from $2.4 million in 2021. Seniors were the most affected, losing more than $5.4 million.
“These most recent statistics clearly show that our seniors are becoming more vulnerable to scams,” said Kavina Nagrani, chair of the OBA’s Elder Law Executive. “By helping them and their caregivers develop a deeper understanding of the laws that protect them, we can provide them with some comfort and empowerment.”

On June 20, the OBA will be recognizing Elder Law Day with two professional development programs – a program for lawyers on Advanced Issues in Elder Law, and a program on Serving the Baby Boomer Generation: Your Aging Client Base). Also on June 20, the late Judith Wahl will be honoured for her contributions to law at the Award of Excellence in Elder Law Celebration. The longtime leader of the Advocacy Centre for the Elderly, Wahl was an elder law pioneer passionate about advocating for the rights of older adults
