The Ministry of the Attorney General, Court Services Division, has advised that an in-custody phone line has been installed to be used by defence counsel when they urgently need to speak to their client at the TRBC to support a bail hearing.
As part of the strip search protocol, the accused has the right to call his/her counsel before being searched and can use the detention phone in the secure interview cubicle to make the outgoing call. Other than for strip search purposes, the phone line should not be used for outgoing calls by in-custody accused. The phone number should only be provided to defence counsel to use and should not be shared with other justice participants.
