Name: Kate Julien
Position: Public Affairs Liaison
What is your current position?
I’m a senior policy advisor at the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO). I provide policy advice on different subject matters that the AGCO regulates - which for me is mainly alcohol and cannabis. I work closely with the law and applicable statues but I don’t give legal advice.
Tell us about your career path. Is it representative of a public sector lawyer?
I completed an undergraduate degree in public policy. All through my degree, I worked and volunteered in politics. Following my degree, I worked at Queen’s Park for various cabinet ministers for about four years. I articled in house at Toronto Hydro, focusing mostly on regulatory work. After my call to the bar, I took the opportunity to work in a policy role under the Attorney General. I gave advice about different areas of legal policy, such as electoral law and professional regulation. I had to find a new opportunity after the June 2018 election because my position was political. The AGCO appealed to me because I really enjoy administrative, public, and regulatory areas of law and I wanted to stay in the broader public sector.
