Hello fellow OBA Education Law Section members!
As the outgoing Chair of the OBA’s Education Law Section, I’d like to thank you for your support of and participation in our Section this past year, despite the impacts of the pandemic on our professional and personal lives. In particular, a big thank you to all the program co-chairs, panelists, and the OBA staff for their time and efforts!
During the summer of 2020, the Education Law Section offered webinars on what school would look like as the 2020-2021 school year approached for families and students, as well as for education workers. In September 2020, we hosted conversations around anti-Black and anti-Indigenous racism in the education system, which brought together legal and policy professionals to talk about how we can ensure equity in school systems. In December, we held a panel on live issues in the education system as 2021 approached, with some great on-the-ground insights from lawyers and educators.
In the first few months of 2021, our Section was not as active as we all continued to work through the ever-changing pandemic landscape, and two programs we had lined up were unable to proceed as we had hoped. We’re looking to reschedule those programs for the 2021-2022 membership year, and have already started talking about other timely and relevant professional development programming for our members in the coming year.
