On October 3, 2019, the CCLHR Section held its 18th Annual Charter Conference at the OBA offices in Toronto. The day brought together an excellent group of social justice advocates, speaking on important topics related to using the Charter. At the Conference, participants were given a rich and diverse range of perspectives on working with the Charter; the big law firm, the government and the sole practitioner fighting for the rights of refugee claimants.
The day profiled the systemic issues of government and explored the process one engages to achieve change and enforce rights.The main takeaway from the day because creative out-of-the-box thinking can create change and support litigation in unique cases. Large firms with more resources are making big strides and so are smaller, one person shows.
