This is the first of two volumes to be published in the 2023-2024 term, and is dedicated to exploring the advocate’s complex and relational duty of civility.
This issue features an interview with a lawyer whose name has become synonymous with civility – Joseph Groia. We sat down with Mr. Groia (accompanied by Earl Cherniak, K.C.) to discuss the Groia v. LSUC case, its journey to the Supreme Court of Canada and its lasting impact on the profession. During our discussion, it quickly became clear that Joe is a lawyer who cares deeply about the interests of his clients, and takes great personal and professional satisfaction in zealously representing them, even if it means doing so at his own expense.
