JOB SUMMARY & CORE DUTIES
Reporting to the President, the General Legal Counsel (GC) is a member of the Association’s executive management team and provides expert legal advice to the President and Board of Directors. The GC will, as a matter of routine, identify and manage legal risk for the President and other members of the Board.
The GC will provide legal advice to the President and other members of the Board in relation to the Association’s constitution, regulations and Board policy, the Police Services Act and Community Safety & Policing Act, criminal, provincial, civil and corporate law while representing the Association where required. The GC will draft legal documents, responds to court orders or any other legal proceeding as directed by the President or Board.
The GC will oversee the case file workflow of a roster of external legal counsel who perform representation work on behalf of the Association and its members on matters involving workplace and conduct investigations, Special Investigations Unit (SIU) files, Law Enforcement Complaints Agency (LECA) files, discipline, and corner inquests.
QUALIFICATIONS
A combination of both education and professional work experience performing job duties require by the job is required and will be assessed as a fit based on an incumbent’s track record and career history. Experience working with the Police Services Act and/or Community Safety & Policing Act is a strong asset for any candidate applying for the position.
