The Ontario Bar Association (OBA) hosts Canada’s largest annual legal gathering from February 6-10, 2018.

The Canadian Bar Association has appointed long-time OBA member and committed volunteer Vivene Salmon as the new CBA Vice-President for the 2018-2019 term.

Based on the recent announced changes to Land Transfer Tax (LTT) affidavits, the Chair of the OBA's Real Property Law Section has compiled a working guide to what is being implemented, when, and the impact of the changes.

This week the OBA introduced its new Mentorship Program, intended to connect members from across the province with the use of an easy-to-use online tool.

On October 26, 2017, the Pensions and Benefits Law Section of the OBA sent a letter to the Ministry of Finance highlighting some of the issues we viewed as critically important for them to consider as they continue to draft legislation implementing the Financial Services Regulatory Authority.

Third Reading of Bill 142 was carried on division on December 5, 2017. Royal Assent is expected later this month, and Proclamation next year, likely with some more changes.

Late this afternoon, the Law Society released a report of its Access to Justice Committee, which makes recommendations for the development of specialized paralegal licenses to provide family law services. The Committee seeks approval of these and other recommendations at the Law Society Convocation tomorrow morning (December 1, 2017 at 9 am).
