The OBA Women Lawyers Forum Section is pleased to announce Sukanya Pillay, Executive Director and General Counsel, Canadian Civil Liberties Association & Education Trust is the recipient of the 2016 OBA Award of Excellence in the Promotion of Women’s Equality.
Sukanya has worked in both the public and private sectors in Canada and abroad for the past 26 years. She has focused on issues relating to women refugees, women’s health care, and the right for women to meaningfully participate in democracies. In particular, she has also advocated for women’s freedom of religion, expression and speech; for women’s right to food and food security; for women’s economic, social and cultural rights; and for women’s mobility rights. She has used her written submissions, op-eds, legal papers, and video documentaries to advocate for these rights, including but not limited to the plight of refugee women in North Africa, the right of women to food and livelihood in India, and the right of a woman to wear a niqab in the courtroom and in public spaces in Canada.
Ms. Pillay will be honoured at an award dinner at our Twenty Toronto Street Conferences and Events Centre on June 22, 2016. View more information.
