Oh, the Places You Will Go! Career Transitions

A panel of four Ottawa lawyers shared their stories on how they ended up working outside of firms and offered their best advice for young lawyers who are considering an alternative legal career. The panel members included Audrey Barrett (National Judicial Institute), Deborah Bayley (Privy Council Office, Government of Canada), Erin McNamara (Scotiabank) and Stefano Taucer (Rogers Communications). Below is an overview of some of what each shared with those in attendance.

In Tomorrow’s Lawyers, leading scholar Richard Susskind envisions the future of legal practice. He argues that with the introduction of new technologies there will be a dramatic change in the jobs that lawyers hold. In particular, he predicts a sharp decrease in the number of traditional legal practitioners coupled with the emergence of new jobs for lawyers.

The Ontario Bar Association’s Young Lawyer’s Division East held a breakfast event entitled “Practice Management Review Tips for Young Lawyers,” which took place on October 21, 2015 at the offices of Nelligan O’Brien Payne LLP. The program was co-chaired by Michael Beeson (Lavery) and Susanne Greisbach (Brazeau Seller LLP). Heeny Harmsen, a practice management counsel at the Law Society of Upper Canada, explained the Law Society's Practice Review Program.
