How often do lawyers get the opportunity to take a break from their busy, demanding professions to perform with other legal professionals and share their musical talents and artistic passion with the Toronto community while supporting a worthy cause, forging meaningful connections with colleagues and having fun in the process? Rarely. What if I told you that there was annual theatrical event directed and produced by a premier theatre company that allowed lawyers to do just that?
You may have heard chatter about it amongst your peers, you may have met someone who was a cast or band member, you may have even seen a previous production and could not help but feel the energy, enthusiasm and excitement on and off the stage. Captive readers, I present to you – “the Lawyer Show”.
The Lawyer Show is the main annual fundraiser for Nightwood Theatre (“Nightwood”), a registered charitable organization and Canada’s flagship feminist theatre since 1979. Every year, 40 members of the legal community rehearse for three months with a team of dedicated professional directors, designers and vocal coaches to stage an exhilarating, entertaining, professional-calibre musical. The Lawyer Show accounts for 20% of Nightwood’s annual revenue, enabling Nightwood to continue to produce groundbreaking feminist theatre, foster exceptional artistic talent and produce award-winning theatre by women.
Since the Lawyer Show’s inception in 2010, 260 legal professionals have appeared in 10 shows to raise more than $1,235,000 in support of Nightwood. Last year’s sold-out production of Mamma Mia! raised close to $200,000!
