Plan for the Ban: Canada Proposes Plastic Labelling Rules and Federal Plastics Registry

The sixth in McMillan LLP’s “Plan for the Ban” series, this bulletin summarizes two consultation papers published by the federal government: one on the creation of labelling rules to enhance the accuracy of recyclability and compostability information on plastic packaging and single-use plastics, and the other on the establishment of a federal plastics registry requiring plastic producers to report annually on their plastic contribution to the Canadian economy.

The 2022 Toronto International Film Festival opened with the world premiere of The Swimmers, a film based on the true story of two sisters who escaped from Syria after the start of the war in an effort to make it to Germany. As an immigration lawyer, it was a worthwhile reminder of the realities that are faced by many refugee claimants not just on their physical journey, but also once they have reached their destination.

What We Know So Far about the Prohibition of the Purchase of Residential Property by Non-Canadians

Section 235 of Bill C-19 (which received royal assent on June 23, 2022) introduced the Prohibition on the Purchase of Residential Property by Non-Canadians Act, which prohibits Non-Canadians from purchasing, directly or indirectly, any residential property in Canada. The introduction of the bill is in accordance with one of the federal government’s primary goals of stabilizing the housing market and providing more affordable housing to Canadians.

The Subjective Element of the Workplace Harassment Test and Decision No. 35/22

This article reviews a recent split decision from a panel of the WSIAT, whereby a majority composed of the side members denied a worker's appeal for entitlement to Chronic Mental Stress. The Vice-Chair would have allowed entitlement. The decision highlights how the weight given to subjective evidence can impact the outcome of CMS appeals.
