The Public Sector Lawyers Section hosted a panel discussion on October 10, 2018 to explore the unique needs and considerations of corporate governance for public sector entities.

As part of the three-day OBA institute, the Public Sector Lawyers group gathered on February 7th for an evening of reflection and discussion led by Program Chair Kate Julien. The evening began with a casual forum where VIP guests the Honourable Lise Favreau, of the Superior Court of Justice, Michael Gottheil, Executive Chair, Social Justice Tribunals Ontario, and Karen Manarin, Barrister & Solicitor shared insights from their own experiences working in the public sector.

On December 4, 2017, the Public Sector Lawyers Section of the OBA hosted a welcome reception for articling students and LPP candidates. The evening featured a talk by Janet E. Minor, Treasurer of the Law Society of Upper Canada from 2014 to 2016 and the first lawyer from the public sector to hold that position.

What role does self-interest play in self-regulation? Do Crown prosecutors have ethical obligations different from other lawyers? What is the best way to regulate judicial conduct? How are law firms regulated in today’s multi-jurisdictional reality?

On May 26, 2017, lawyers gathered to honour Voy Stelmaszynski with the Ontario Bar Association’s 2017 Tom Marshall Award of Excellence for Public Sector Lawyers.

On June 15, 2017, Sara Blake (Ministry of the Attorney General) and Jeff Cowan (WeirFoulds) hosted a group of lawyers at the OBA to provide insightful analyses of six recent cases from the public sector.
