Legalization of Marijuana – Implications for Municipal and Provincial Governments

The federal government appointed the Task Force on Cannabis Legalization and Regulation in June 2016 and released a discussion paper to inform the work of the Task Force. The report sets out nine public policy objectives, the most important of which is to keep marijuana out of the hands of children and youth, and to keep profits out of the hands of criminals.

Lessons Learned when Appointing a Municipal Ombudsman

In December 2015, the Regional Municipality of York appointed ADR Chambers Inc. as the municipal ombudsman. The appointment followed a procurement process undertaken jointly by the Region and its nine local municipalities. York Region was one of the first Ontario municipalities to appoint an ombudsman pursuant to the Municipal Act, 2001.
