Your AI Questions Answered by OBA’s Innovator in Residence

OBA Innovator in Residence Colin Lachance has been hosting a weekly Office Hours Zoom over the lunch hour to discuss the latest AI developments, facilitate conversations with leading AI thinkers, and answer members’ questions about how to effectively integrate AI into their practice to better serve their clients. Here are a couple of questions he has fielded in recent sessions:

Q: How do we get started in AI when our firms and clients are concerned about confidentiality?

A: Start playing with free versions of ChatGPT, Claude and other AI chatbots on general topics and with public documents. Small experiments build your knowledge and confidence – then grow your experiments to reveal their potential.

Q: Where's the value if the Chat output is wrong and I spend more time correcting or redoing the work?

A; First, invest more time in building your questions (prompts) and refinements, and see how narrowing the scope of your requests and providing additional context leads to better answers. Second, look for value in activities where complete accuracy isn't essential (e.g., brainstorming, quick summaries and insights, lists, etc.), and you will become more familiar with the strengths of the models.

The next Office Hours will take place on August 27. Submit your AI questions anytime through the registration comment field or by writing Colin directly at colin@pgya.ca. You can view videos from previous sessions here.

A Good AI Prompt Can Generate a Time-Saving Summary

TECHxpo – AI Edition is tomorrow! Among the expert panelists who will offer practical tips you can use in your practice are Nicole Biros-Bolton, Bird Bolt Law, and Brent Arnold, Gowling WLG, who are talking about What You Can Do with Inxpensive or Free AI tools. From Brent comes this bit of insight:

“LLMs (large language models) are great at synthesizing information from publicly available sources. If your topic is being talked about publicly, a good prompt will give you an organized summary of what you need to know.”

He also offers this important caveat/reminder: “Choose an AI tool that cites it sources. This way you can check its work and refine your prompts.”

In a recent AI Office Hours installment, OBA’s Innovator in Residence recommended this to his daughter when she asked for suggestions for a Spotify playlist that would appeal to guests from different generations. With a few prompts, ChatGPT got her started with some excellent ideas that she refined – asking it to fill in gaps and make modifications. This is a fun way to experiment with AI tools and refine your prompting approach!
