The Ontario Bar Association’s International Law Section is pleased to congratulate Paul Lalonde on receiving the 2026 Award of Excellence in International Law.
Mr. Lalonde is Co-Chair of Dentons Canada’s National Regulatory Group and a global leader in international trade law at the firm. Over a career spanning more than three decades, he has been at the forefront of major developments in trade remedies, investment arbitration, government procurement, and anti-corruption compliance. Widely recognized as one of Canada’s foremost international trade and regulatory lawyers, Paul has played a defining role in shaping both the practice and evolution of international law in Canada.
His leadership extends well beyond private practice. Mr. Lalonde has served as Chair of the International Law Section of the Canadian Bar Association, where he helped guide the national conversation on international trade, dispute settlement, and cross-border governance. He also served as Chair and President of Transparency International Canada, leading efforts to strengthen anti-corruption standards, enhance transparency, and promote rule of law reform. Through these roles, his public service contributions have meaningfully advanced Canada’s international legal framework and supported global integrity initiatives.
Perhaps most notably, Mr. Lalonde’s impact on the international law bar is reflected in his deep commitment to mentorship and professional development. He invests significant time in sharing knowledge, experience, and practical judgment with colleagues at all stages of practice, particularly junior lawyers he works with, who extol his ability to patiently teach rather than direct and to help tie specific issues to broader concepts in international law. As one associate put it: “[Mr. Lalonde] is a steward of the profession, a teacher of international law in the fullest sense, and a role model whose influence extends far beyond any single case or client. His leadership is felt in the way he shares his expertise, nurtures the next generation of practitioners, and sets an unwavering example of professionalism, integrity, and civility.”
It is a privilege for the Ontario Bar Association’s International Law Section to present the 2026 Award of Excellence in International Law to Mr. Lalonde.
