This is your occasional dip into what child rights researchers and advocates have been up to of late. You’ll also want to read on for some helpful links as you get ready for National Child Day on November 20.
Research and advocacy
- The CBA’s Privacy and Access to Information Law and Child and Youth Law Sections made a joint submission to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada on establishing a Children’s Privacy Code.
- The United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child is working on General Comment 27 on children’s right to access to justice and to an effective remedy.
- Earlier this year, the Canadian Journal of Children’s Rights published a special volume in commemoration of the Honourable Landon Pearson, O.C., namesake of the Landon Pearson Resource Centre for the Study of Childhood and Children’s Rights.
- The most recent volume of the Canadian Bar Review includes an article called How to make legal proceedings in Canada more child friendly?, drawing on comparative research of non-judicial child-serving institutions across Canada.
National Child Day 2025
- Join your Child and Youth Law colleagues for a networking reception to mark the occasion of the inaugural OBA Award of Excellence in Child and Youth Law.
- Both the Government of Canada and UNICEF Canada have extensive information and resources about National Child Day and children’s rights.
- Keep an eye out for events in your area by following various child-serving organizations. If you don’t know where to start, you might take inspiration from the members of the National Alliance for Children and Youth.
