Meet Your Business Law Section Executive: Interview with Avram Musafija

February 13, 2026 | Tomiwa Ogundipe

When did you first get involved with the OBA?

I first became interested in getting involved with the OBA as I was finishing articling. I subsequently ran for and was elected as a Member-at-Large with the support of colleagues at my firm.

What is your role on the OBA Business Law Section?

I am currently serving as Chair of the OBA Business Law Section.

What is/are your specific area(s) of practice?

Corporate and Business Law, with a focus on reorganizations, M&A, and complex cross-border transactions.

How long have you been practicing?

Six years.

What is the most challenging aspect of your job?

Balancing the technical precision required in complex transactions with the pace and expectations of multi-jurisdictional deal timelines (and time zones!), while ensuring that every step remains compliant across the relevant legal frameworks.

What is the most interesting or fulfilling aspect of your job?

I am lucky to get to work on sophisticated matters that require strategic problem-solving and regularly expose me to new legislation and areas of law. It keeps me interested! I also find it rewarding to collaborate with international teams and gain insight into how practitioners in other jurisdictions approach similar challenges or the constraints they face.

If you were not practicing in your current area of law, what other area(s) of law could you see yourself in and why?

Potentially emerging technology law or even space law. I am interested in innovation and the way new tech intersects with regulatory frameworks and business strategies.

What are you excited for as an executive member of the OBA Business Section?

The Business Law Section has been very active recently, and I am especially excited about the ongoing multi-section consultations our committees are undertaking. I am also looking forward to finding more opportunities for collaborative programming across specialty areas.

What is the one thing you'd like to see the OBA Business Section do this year?

I would like to see us continue to expand the high-quality CPD programming with more specialized and practical guidance for business law practitioners.

Can you mention one exciting thing you have worked on recently?

Recently, I have been leading complex advisory work on a multi-jurisdictional corporate reorg that involved foreign continuances, amalgamations, and capital restructuring across a number of continents. These types of matters are particularly engaging because they require aligning technical statutory compliance with practical execution across several jurisdictions.

Where did you go to law school?

Bond University in Australia.

What was the most helpful thing you learned in law school?

Surfing! I also, unfortunately, confirmed that a professional surfing career was not in the cards for me.

All kidding aside, the most valuable thing I learned was to jump at opportunities that pushed me to grow. I found ways to work with talented and experienced individuals. This allowed me to learn how to approach complex problems, not just legal problems, breaking them down into manageable components.

What is the one advice you wish someone had given you when you were still a student?

Build relationships early, both inside and outside your school, firm, and professional network. The practice of law is ultimately collaborative, and your network will support you at every stage of your career, whether through mentorship, referrals, or new opportunities.

What is your go-to mental health wellness activity?

I enjoy being outdoors with my family, swimming, and rock climbing.

What is your go-to coffee order?

Flat white.
