The Junior Contract Lawyer supports the Corporate Legal Office by increasing efficiencies, reducing legal outsourcing costs, and reducing legal liability and risk. Supporting the Director of Legal and working alongside the GLC (Governance, Legal, Compliance, and Privacy) team, and collaborating with other business units, the Junior Contract Lawyer’s responsibilities include drafting and reviewing various contracts and assisting with general legal matters, including corporate legal claims, complaints, and special projects.
What will you do?
- Draft, review, and negotiate various contracts in consultation with the Director of Legal
- Assist with the development and maintenance of contract precedents and standards that adhere to applicable legal and regulatory requirements and best practices
- Communicate legal risks and concerns to, and collaborate with, the Director of Legal and multiple business units as appropriate, including Compliance, Privacy, Procurement, and Risk
- Support the Director of Legal with general legal matters, corporate litigation, complaints, and special projects
- Document and maintain an audit trail of contract reviews, advice, and commentary
- Liaise with external legal counsel, as necessary, for technical expertise
- Deliver regular reporting to the Director of Legal
- Administrative and other duties as required
What will you need?
- Licensed to practice law in Ontario and in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario
- 0 to 3 years of post-call experience
- Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills
- Effective written and verbal communication skills
- Proven ability to maintain confidentiality
- Strong knowledge of the Microsoft suite of office tools
- Speed in execution as well as the ability to balance competing priorities
- Articling or post-call experience in insurance or with a Federally Regulated Financial Institution would be an asset
