Mariam Moktar has been elected 2nd vice-president of the Ontario Bar Association for the 2024-25 term, beginning on September 1. The Toronto lawyer, who comes to the role after having served for two years on the OBA Board of Directors as treasurer and Finance chair, will become president of the OBA in 2026.
Moktar is a commercial litigator at Paliare Roland Rosenberg Rothstein LLP, and a member of the Federal Judicial Advisory Committee for Ontario - Greater Toronto Area.
Forced to flee Somalia following the outbreak of civil war in that country, she was raised by her aunt in Canada. Moktar credits the sacrifice of her family for giving her the determination to become a lawyer, and the OBA for being an association that opens doors and values a broad range of experience.
She is committed to advocating for initiatives that enhance court efficiency, broaden access to justice, promote effective law reform, and ensure the responsible integration of technology and artificial intelligence.
