The OBA is pleased to announce that the winner of the 2016 OBA Randall Echlin Mentorship Award is Malcolm MacKillop, Partner, Shields O’Donnell MacKillop LLP.
Malcolm is a founding member of SOM LLP and has practised exclusively in employment law for more than 25 years. He is a member of both the Law Society of Newfoundland and Labrador and the Law Society of Upper Canada.
Malcolm’s primary mentoring philosophy is to “learn by doing” and he has given exceptional mentorship to a younger generation while putting this to practice. He delegates significant responsibility while at the same time acting as a resource. He recognizes contributions made by associates, presenting important opportunity for associates to develop their expertise in the employment area and enhance their career profiles. He is also a highly gifted litigator and has a vast knowledge of the employment law. He is both the product of Justice Echlin’s mentorship and the means by which his mentorship values are being passed on to the next generation of lawyers. His enthusiasm is infectious and is shared with the people who work with him.
Malcolm has been Lexpert ranked in the Guide to the Leading 500 Lawyers in Canada. He has also achieved the highest Peer Rating (BV) by Martindale-Hubbel. Malcolm has authored a number of acclaimed texts in employment law, and has published columns in the Globe & Mail and Toronto Star newspapers. He has provided on-air commentary to radio broadcasts as well as CBC and CTV. Malcolm was awarded the Queen Elizabeth medal for philanthropy abroad by the Governor General of Canada.
The presentation of the OBA Randall Echlin Mentorship Award will take place on June 1, 2016 at the LSUC, Convocation Hall.
