We are pleased to announce that Mr. Brian Iler, of Iler Campbell, Barristers and Solicitors LLP is the winner of the 2016 AMS John Hodgson Award.
Brian practises co-op and non-profit law, corporate and commercial law, transactions, wills and estates, construction law, employment law as well as acting as general counsel. For 42 years Brian has focused on enabling social change. Through his passionate efforts he has had a significant and sustaining impact on the non-profit sector.
Brian has been tirelessly providing crucial legal support to Ontario’s non-profit housing sector, the renewable energy sectors as well as pioneering work for social enterprise development.
He has been active in the development of housing co-op law and governance, and he’s been adamant that housing co-operatives receive affordable, yet creative, legal services. Since the early 2000s, through paid and voluntary work, Brian has been an integral part of the birth of the renewable energy sector in Ontario. Brian has pioneered the Community Bonds as a finance model for non profits, opening up a significant new source of money for non-profit organizations.
Brian has been on the board of a number of non-profits that make a difference, among which TREC Renewable Energy Co-operative in its early years followed by The Ontario Sustainable Energy Association and others in the green energy field. In addition Brian has been director of the Centre of Social Innovation and counsel to the Ontario Co-operative Association and recipient of its 2002 Lifetime Achievement Award.
While not always “non-profit”, Brian works to distribute profit differently in society – employing co-operative corporations to ensure community growth. He has provided opportunity to many lawyers starting their careers providing legal services to the non-profit sector.
Brian continues to demonstrate the passion enthusiasm m energy and idealism that the sector has grown to expect from him. ‘He truly believes in his work and promoting social change .
