Since the beginning of my presidency, I have taken the opportunity to drop by various law schools across the province. These visits have included talks, luncheons, networking events, and even assisting Kristyn Muszynski and Todd Storms with teaching an advocacy class at Queen's Law. We also had a networking event at the OBA, bringing together students from the University of Toronto, Osgoode and Ryerson LPP.

These visits have shown me that there have been more than a few changes since I first joined the Ontario Bar Association more than thirty years ago, while I was studying at Osgoode Hall.

These are exciting times in Thunder Bay at Lakehead University, as the Bora Laskin Faculty of Law sees their first graduating class in 2016. As well, the young lawyers in the community who are part of the OBA have taken the steps to form the Young Lawyers Division – North (YLD-N).

Though students and young lawyers come from different places and circumstances, all share varied emotions. They are full of energy and enthusiasm as they embark on their path in the legal profession. This is tempered, however, by fear and anxiety as they face the uncertainties of school work, getting good articling positions, and career opportunities after their call to the bar.

I can say that what hasn’t changed is how important and impactful membership in the OBA can be, particularly as you start your career. The OBA as an organization is certainly supportive and helpful to its members  As I mentioned in my article back in January, I encourage members to take full advantage of everything this organization has to offer:

• Participate in YLD - these networking relationships will last a lifetime.

• Contribute to drafting a submission to get a better understanding and appreciation of how laws are  developed.

• Submit a case comment.

• Get involved with one of the 39 Sections or our forums and committees to learn more about recent developments in the law.

• Connect with a mentor though the OBA Mentorship Program for guidance and practical tips that will help launch a successful career in law.

It was inspiring to hear the Chief Justice of Ontario, the Honourable Mr. Justice Strathy, speak of the important role of the OBA/CBA in shaping his legal career, when he spoke at OBA Council at the beginning of April.

From my tour, it was wonderful to meet with so many new and aspiring lawyers. I carry on in encouraging all members to “Join In”, wherever you are in your legal career.
