We are pleased to announce that the Honourable Howard I. Wetston, Q.C. is the 2016 winner of the OBA Tom Marshall Award of Excellence for Public Sector Lawyers.
Mr. Wetston currently serves as a counsel at Goodmans LLP. A respected public servant and a distinguished lawyer, jurist, regulator and executive, he is a prominent Canadian leader with deep expertise in competition law and policy, securities regulation, energy regulation and administrative law. Wetston was a judge of the Federal Court of Canada from 1993 to 1999, and before that was Director of Investigation and Research with the federal Competition Bureau from 1989 to 1993. He served as the Chair and CEO of the Ontario Securities Commission (OSC) from 2010 to 2015, was the Chair & CEO of the Ontario Energy Board from 2003 to 2010, and was Vice-Chair of the OSC from 1999 to 2004.
Mr. Wetston has had a most distinguished career as a dedicated public service lawyer, judge and head of government agencies and Crown corporations at the federal and provincial level. He has also been a mentor to many young articling students and lawyers, sharing his passion for public service and intellectual curiosity.
Wetstons's contributions to public service in general and regulation in particular are distinguished by his commitment to innovation, transparency and accountability. His dedication to public service and public sector law and exemplary accomplishments in key sectors of the economy have touched the lives of millions of Canadians, and in particular Ontarians.
On May 25, 2016, Ontario's public sector lawyers will gather with the Ontario Bar Association to recognize Howard Wetston's remarkable career contributions to public law.
